Properties of Solids lists 11 items for elasticity and density practicals in school and college physics labs: a Hooke’s law apparatus and three packs of springs, metal cylinders, cubes and spheres for density and specific gravity, a specific gravity kit, and a kit of assorted material blocks. Sizes below are the ones given in each listing.
Springs and Hooke’s law
| Item | Coil diameter | Closed length, coil / overall | Limit, as listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Springs Steel, Expandable (pack of 25) | About 16 mm | 20 mm / 50 mm | Extends about 150 mm without permanent deformation |
| Expandable Springs, Long Extension (pack of 25) | About 15.5 mm, wire 0.7 mm | 20 mm / 55 mm | Extends about 450 mm without permanent deformation |
| Springs Extension, Type 1 | About 19 mm, wire 0.6 mm | 23 mm / 56 mm | Maximum recommended load 100 g |
The Hooke’s Law Apparatus has a 15 cm adjustable mirror scale on a support 30 cm high, with an adjustable hook and a spring carrying a weight hanger and pointer. The mirror removes parallax: the pointer is read when it hides its own reflection. Five 20 g slotted weights are recommended with it. Loading the spring in equal steps and plotting extension against load gives a straight line up to the limit of proportionality, whose gradient gives the spring constant. The same set-up, with the load set bouncing, is listed for simple harmonic motion experiments.
Density and specific gravity
| Set | Metals or materials | Size, as listed |
|---|---|---|
| Cubes for Density Investigation | Brass, lead, zinc, copper, aluminium and iron, each with a hook | 20 mm cubes, set of 6 |
| Specific Gravity Metal Cylinders | Aluminium, steel, brass and copper, each with a hook | 5 cm long, 13 mm in diameter, set of 4 |
| Specific Heat Specimen Set | Copper, lead, brass, zinc, iron and aluminium, stamped with the metal name | Equal mass of 100 g and equal diameter of about 16 mm, so lengths run from about 5 to 19 cm; drilled near one end for suspension; in a wooden block |
| Spheres, Assorted | Wood, aluminium, steel, copper, brass and lead | Six solid 25 mm balls in a plastic box |
| Spheres, Drilled, Assorted | Wood, aluminium, steel, copper, brass and plastic | Six 25 mm balls, each drilled with a 3 mm hole |
The specific heat set doubles as a density lesson. Because all six cylinders have the same mass and diameter, the denser the metal, the shorter the cylinder: lead is the shortest and aluminium the longest. The equal-size cubes and spheres make the opposite point, since equal volumes of different materials weigh different amounts. The Specific Gravity Set gives a group everything for a first specific gravity experiment: an aluminium displacement vessel, an overflow bucket, a spring balance and three metal cubes.
Materials
The Assorted Materials Kit is a set of rectangular blocks of different sizes for learning the appearance, feel, weight, texture, hardness and density of common materials. The materials named in the listing are Perspex, glass, slate, aluminium, iron, marble, softwood, hardwood, paraffin wax and foamed polystyrene.

Questions buyers ask
Which springs stretch the furthest?
The Expandable Springs, Long Extension, listed at about 450 mm of extension without permanent deformation, against about 150 mm for the standard expandable springs. Both come in packs of 25.
Are weights supplied with the Hooke’s law apparatus?
The listing recommends five 20 g slotted weights for use with it; slotted weights are listed under Weights & Balances.
Why are the specific heat cylinders different lengths?
All six have the same 100 g mass and about the same 16 mm diameter, so the length depends on the density of each metal.
Which metals are in the density cube set?
Brass, lead, zinc, copper, aluminium and iron, as 20 mm cubes with hooks.
