Properties of Liquids lists 17 items for fluids practicals in school and college physics labs: apparatus for pressure in liquids, Archimedes’ principle and displacement, capillarity and Bernoulli’s effect, a Fortin barometer, and the Boyle’s law and Charles’s law apparatus for gases. Sizes below are the ones given in each listing.

Pressure in liquids

ItemWhat the listing specifies
Equality of Pressure in LiquidsGlass bulb about 50 mm in diameter with a plunger, for showing that pressure in a liquid is transmitted equally in all directions (Pascal’s law)
Fluid Pressure ApparatusTwo brass cylinders of different diameters with pistons, joined by a brass tube, on a wooden base; circular platforms on the pistons for loading masses
Glass Force PumpTransparent working model in silicate glass showing the piston and valves of a force pump, on a wooden stand with a plastic trough

The fluid pressure apparatus is the hydraulic press in miniature. The same pressure acts on both pistons, so the force on each is in proportion to its area, and a small load on the narrow piston balances a larger one on the wide piston.

Archimedes’ principle and displacement

ItemWhat the listing specifies
Bucket and Cylinder ApparatusTwo aluminium pieces of equal volume: a solid cylinder with a ring at one end and a close-fitting bucket
Eureka Jar (Over Flow Can)White polypropylene can with a spout to drain the overflow; unbreakable and non-corrosive
Displacement Vessel, GlassBorosilicate glass vessel with an overflow spout, about 120 x 65 mm
Displacement Vessel, TinTin-plate vessel with a hammer-tone painted finish and an overflow spout, about 115 x 50 mm

With the bucket and cylinder, the cylinder hangs below the bucket from a spring balance and is lowered into water. Its apparent loss of weight is then made up exactly by filling the bucket with water, because the bucket holds the same volume as the cylinder displaces. The overflow vessels give the volume of an irregular solid as the water that spills from the spout into a measuring cylinder.

Capillarity and flow

  • Capillary Tubes Set: four glass capillaries of different bore, with a wider tube as the reservoir, on a stand; tubes about 15 cm high.
  • Capillary Tubes Apparatus: six capillary tubes 125 mm long of different bore, standing in a shallow metal trough of water.
  • Bernoulli Tube Apparatus: two flow tubes 500 mm long and 13 mm in diameter, each with three side tubes 25 mm long about 150 mm apart for glass manometer tubes. One has a constriction at the middle side tube, and the other is a constant-bore gradient tube. Six lengths of glass tubing, two swan-neck outlets and rubber connectors are included.

In both capillary sets, water rises highest in the narrowest tube, since the rise is inversely proportional to the bore. In the Bernoulli tube, the manometer at the constriction reads lowest, because the water speeds up there and its pressure falls.

Barometer and gas laws

ItemWhat the listing specifies
Fortin BarometerDual scale, 25 to 32 inches and 640 to 810 mm, read by rack-and-pinion verniers to 0.002 inch and 0.1 mm; 6 mm bore glass tube in an enamelled and lacquered brass case on a polished wall board; glass cistern with a reference point for setting the mercury level; −10 to 50 °C thermometer on the board; supplied without mercury
Boyle Law ApparatusWide-bore, extra-strong glass tube in front of a 0 to 60 cm³ scale; air trapped by coloured oil from a metal pressure chamber with a Bourdon-type gauge reading 0 to 3.4 x 105 N m-2; pump inlet valve; plastic safety screen; supplied with oil; about 690 mm high
Boyles Law Apparatus (Tube)Funnel tube and stopcock tube joined by flexible tubing on aluminium rods, one raised or lowered and locked; cast-iron base with levelling screws; mercury not included, and a heavy oil can be used instead
Boyle Law Apparatus (Simple)Sealed syringe on wooden platforms, loaded with masses; the volume is read from the syringe scale
Charles Law KitGlass U-tube 15 mm in diameter: one plain limb 220 mm long, one limb graduated 25 to 35 ml in 0.2 ml steps ending in a 38 mm bulb, and a third limb 185 x 6 mm at right angles; with rubber bung, tubing, pinch clip, a 1000 ml tall-form beaker and stirrer; needs 30 ml of mercury, not supplied
Air Thermometer (Charles Law Apparatus)Capillary 40 cm long, sealed at one end, on a wooden centimetre scale; a mercury index traps the air; teak stand with a deep tray to catch spilt mercury; supplied without mercury

For a class without mercury, the oil-filled Boyle Law Apparatus reads volume and absolute pressure directly, and the syringe model is the simplest demonstration. On the air thermometer, the trapped air column lengthens in step with temperature, and extending the line back to zero length introduces absolute zero and the Kelvin scale.

Questions buyers ask

Which items come without mercury?
The Fortin barometer, the Charles law kit (which needs 30 ml), the air thermometer and the tube-type Boyle’s law apparatus are all listed without mercury. The tube-type apparatus can use a heavy oil instead.

Which Boyle’s law apparatus needs no mercury at all?
The Boyle Law Apparatus, which traps the air with coloured oil and reads pressure on a Bourdon-type gauge, and the syringe-type Boyle Law Apparatus (Simple).

What does the Bernoulli tube apparatus include?
A constricted Bernoulli tube and a constant-bore gradient tube, each 500 x 13 mm with three side tubes, plus six lengths of glass tubing, two swan-neck outlets and rubber connectors.

What sizes are the displacement vessels?
The glass vessel is about 120 x 65 mm and the tin-plate vessel about 115 x 50 mm; both have an overflow spout.
